In Hindu mythology, Goddess Lakshmi represents the goal of like, which includes worldly as well as spiritual prosperity. She is usually depicted with four arms, wearing red cloth with gold lining and is sitting or standing on a lotus. Her four hands represent the four ends of human life: righteousness, genuine desires, wealth and liberation from birth and death. The front hands represent the activity in the physical work, while the band hands indicate the spiritual activities.
The lotus seat, which Lakshmi can be seen standing or sitting in, signifies that while living in this worked, one should enjoy its wealth, but not become obsessed with it. Such a living is analogous to a lotus that grows in water but is not wetted by water. The Goddess is regularly worshiped in home shrines and at temples, and offered special worshiped annually, on the auspicious day of Diwali.
